A 2016 meta-analysis of 14 studies found serum zinc significantly lower in prostate cancer patients than in both benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) patients and healthy men — but zinc in BPH patients was actually higher than in healthy controls, not lower, the opposite of what many product claims imply.

Separately, researchers measuring zinc directly inside prostate tissue (not blood) have consistently found it drops sharply in cancerous regions compared to healthy tissue nearby — one of the more reproducible findings in prostate cancer biology, tied to how malignant cells lose the normal ability to hold onto zinc as they shift toward the energy metabolism that fuels tumor growth. That tissue-level finding is specific to cancer. It isn't the same thing as the BPH pattern above, even though supplement marketing often lumps "low zinc" together as if it applies equally to any prostate problem.

Does Taking Zinc Supplements Improve BPH Symptoms?

That data comes from the Health Professionals Follow-up Study, a cohort tracked from 1986 to 2016, and the researchers behind it also found that 15 or more years of zinc supplement use carried a similarly elevated risk (HR 1.80, 95% CI 1.19-2.73, for the ≥75 mg/day comparison). Two details matter for reading this correctly: the increased risk applied only to aggressive and lethal prostate cancer, not to overall or low-grade diagnoses, and it was tied to high, sustained doses — not to the amount of zinc in a typical daily multivitamin, which usually falls well under 15 mg.

The RDA for adult men is 11 mg a day, and most men get close to that from food alone. The FDA's upper limit is 40 mg a day from supplements, though the European Food Safety Authority sets a stricter 25 mg ceiling for ongoing use — there's no research showing more than that helps the prostate.
